This week’s Get To Know Us is about me, your Maryville Farmers’ Market blog author: Laura Atwood and my farm, Bees’ Needs Art Farm. My husband, Kenneth, and I are both Spanish teachers, which in the summer gives us time to do many other things that we love including spending time with our children, writing, painting, keeping bees, breeding bunnies, picking wild berries, fly-fishing, maintaining huge gardens and preparing fresh food from the our small, three acre farm.
Having grown up with horses, caring for animals and gardening is natural to me.
Because our home is in Alcoa city limits, our choices regarding livestock are limited. Zoning and our fascination with insects led us to become beekeepers. Keeping bees is really where our farm story begins.
Honeybees need flowering plants ten months a year. Pollinators are still in big trouble and we are dedicated to doing all we can to help them survive, including not using herbicides, pesticides nor other chemicals on our farm. The bunnies help us keep the soil rich for growing flowering plants with ample, natural, organic fertilizer. We currently have nine pet Flemish Giants. This month two does had twenty babies. Those will be ready to rehome the first week in June.
For us, the vitality of our farm follows the bees’ needs and utilizes of my background in agriculture and husband’s background as a chef as well as our children’s varied creative talents. Our hope is that the end result is a healthier family and community. We look forward to serving you and getting to know you better at the market this season!
